Torre de ses Portes

Rising sentinel over the southernmost tip of Ibiza, the Torre de ses Portes is a formidable 16th-century coastal watchtower, positioned strategically between the beaches of Es Cavallet and Ses Salines. Constructed between 1584 and 1585 under the rule of King Philip II of Spain, this cylindrical stone structure was part of an elaborate network of defensive towers designed to guard the island’s shores against the persistent threat of Barbary pirate raids so prevalent throughout the Mediterranean during the late Renaissance and early modern period. The tower, built atop earlier Islamic and possibly even Roman lookout points, enabled swift communication via smoke and fire signals with both neighboring watchtowers and the fortified city of Ibiza, effectively creating an early warning system. Despite the passage of centuries, Torre de ses Portes has survived military occupations, including brief British incursions during the War of the Spanish Succession (1701–1714) and also served as a lookout during the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939). Today, it stands as a preserved monument and silent witness to Ibiza’s military heritage, offering history enthusiasts a tangible connection to Mediterranean maritime defense and the island’s enduring strategic importance across the centuries.
