Soportales del Rastrillo

Back to all places

Nestled within the historic heart of Ibiza Town, the Soportales del Rastrillo graces the lively Plaça de Vila, offering a striking architectural feature shaped by centuries of Mediterranean culture. These arcaded porticoes, constructed primarily during the 16th and 17th centuries, exemplify the practical urban design of the era, providing shelter for traders and townspeople during the bustling weekly markets that animated the square. The site became a focal point during the Habsburg and Bourbon periods, witnessing the comings and goings of merchants and local artisans whose craft sustained the walled city of Dalt Vila. These porticoes have stood witness to significant historical events, including the sieges of the town in 1555 and during the War of Spanish Succession in the early 18th century, when the area around Plaça de Vila served as a hub for both civilian and military activity. The Soportales del Rastrillo also reflect the social evolution of Ibiza, as the square evolved from a medieval commercial center to a gathering place for social, political, and religious events. Meticulously preserved, the arcades today not only recall their mercantile origins but also represent the layered history of Ibiza, encompassing Roman, Moorish, and Catalan periods. Visitors strolling beneath the arches are immersed in a living tableau of Mediterranean history, where the stones whisper tales of market days, public assemblies, and the enduring spirit of Ibiza’s Old Town.
