Far de sa punta Grossa
Back to all placesLocated on the rugged coast of Ibiza, the Far de sa Punta Grossa lighthouse stands as a silent sentinel over the Mediterranean Sea. Constructed between 1856 and 1870, this lighthouse was designed to guide ships safely around the perilous cliffs of the island’s northeastern shore. Its creation was commissioned during a period of increased maritime traffic in the Balearic archipelago, reflecting Spain’s effort to modernize its coastal navigation system. Despite its strategic purpose, the lighthouse’s isolated position and challenging access led to considerable difficulties for its keepers and their families, who endured long periods of hardship and solitude. In 1916, after barely half a century in operation, the Far de sa Punta Grossa was decommissioned in favor of a more accessible and effective lighthouse at Punta de Moscarter. Today, the ruins remain, echoing stories of innovation and perseverance, and form a poignant reminder of the technological and social changes that transformed maritime navigation in the region during the 19th and early 20th centuries.
