The Centre d’Interpretació Madina Yabisa, situated in the heart of the historic quarter of Eivissa, offers a fascinating journey into the island’s medieval Islamic past. Located within the ancient walls of Dalt Vila, this interpretative centre is housed in Casa de la Cúria, a building that itself dates back to the 13th century, shortly after the Catalan conquest of Ibiza in 1235. The museum stands on the site of the former Islamic city of Madina Yabisa, a prosperous urban center established during the Islamic domination of the Balearic Islands from 902 until 1235. Through interactive displays, historical documents, and audiovisual installations, visitors gain in-depth insight into the daily life, architecture, and urban planning of the Islamic period. Noteworthy are the preserved remains of the medieval city walls visible within the centre, dating from the 10th and 11th centuries, which provide tangible links to the past. The centre also covers the transition after the Christian reconquest, shedding light on the ensuing changes in the city’s social and cultural landscape. Serving as a gateway to understanding the UNESCO-designated Dalt Vila, the Madina Yabisa Interpretation Centre is essential for those interested in the layered histories and pivotal events that shaped Ibiza over the centuries, from its time as a flourishing Muslim city to its integration into the Crown of Aragon.
