Baluard de Sant Jordi
Back to all placesBaluard de Sant Jordi stands as a significant fortification within the historic city walls of Ibiza, dating back to the 16th century. Constructed between 1576 and 1585 as part of the ambitious Renaissance bastioned fortifications designed by Italian engineers Giovanni Battista Calvi and Jacobo Paleazzo Fratín, this bastion formed an integral defense against Ottoman and pirate incursions, which threatened the Mediterranean throughout that era. The Baluard de Sant Jordi not only showcases robust masonry and classic angular bastion architecture, but also once housed artillery and troops, bearing witness to decades of strategic military use. In 1642, during the Catalan Revolt, its position helped safeguard the city against imminent threats. Over the centuries, the bastion has been carefully restored and is now a testament to Ibiza’s rich military legacy, featuring interpretative panels detailing its construction and strategic importance. Its presence offers a fascinating insight into early modern military engineering and the pivotal role Ibiza played in the defense of Spain’s maritime interests in the Mediterranean.
